Though you may not spot the ghosts of witches past, you will visit the waterfront (Salem Maritime National Historic Site) where you’ll see Derby Wharf, once home to ships bound for Canton China, the Custom House to see where author Nathaniel Hawthorne (“The Scarlet Letter”) worked during the late 1840’s, and the Salem Common, the quintessential New England green.
Following the walking tour you’ll go directly to the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) where you will tour the early 1800’s Chinese House, originally located in China, which was painstakingly taken apart and fairly recently reassembled at PEM, making it a rarified realm as far as museums go. You will have time to break from the pack for further museum exploration (there are fabulous collections from the Orient, Pacific, etc as well as fine furniture made in Salem) and for lunch. The group will reassemble in the main lobby at 2:45PM near the admissions counter where you will return to the train station via Boston.
WHEN: Sunday, October 24, 2010 from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM. The tour will meet at North Station on Causeway Street in Boston at 9:00AM. Students may take the train or drive themselves to the Salem Train Station, where they will meet up with the rest of the group at 9:45am.
COST: $25.00 per person. The price of the tour DOES NOT include Train Ticket, Admission to the Peabody Essex Museum, or Lunch.
RSVP: Registration is necessary. Please visit www.bcae.org or call the Boston Center for Adult Education at 617-267-4430 to sign up.
