Researcher T.J. Todd will explore the histories of two of Old North’s most famous seafaring congregants: Captain Samuel Nicholson, the first commander of the USS Constitution, and Captain Thomas Gruchy, the privateer who captured and donated the beautiful carved angels in the church’s gallery.
In addition to the exploits of the Nicholson and Gruchy, Todd will delve into the daily life experience of Boston’s sailors, including Old North’s free and indentured Black congregants.
Attendees will gain a better understanding of Old North’s role in Boston’s identity as a port city.
The online event is accessible with a donation of any amount to support the Old North Foundation’s virtual and on-site programs, which aim to inspire children and adults alike to consider the ways in which they can build a more just and equitable world.
