Can you spare one hour a week to change the future of a child experiencing homelessness?

School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) is seeking volunteers to become one-on-one afterschool tutors/mentors and positive adult role models for children experiencing homelessness in Brockton, Stoughton, Middleboro, New Bedford, and Norwell.

As a SOWMA tutor, you will help a pre-K through 12th grade student overcome obstacles to learning and achieve his or her full educational potential. You will receive training in effective tutoring strategies and ongoing support from SOWMA’s professional staff. No prior experience is needed. A three month commitment is requested.

Tutor trainings will begin on August 15th and continue throughout the 2011 – 2012 school year at locations in Easton, Norwell, No. Dartmouth, Bridgewater, and Brockton. Every SOWMA volunteer tutor is required to attend a tutor training session before working with a student.

To find out more about becoming a one-on-one afterschool tutor/mentor for a child experiencing homelessness in your area, contact Robin Gilbert at robin@sowma.org, or phone 508.587-9091. Learn more by visiting the SOWMA website at www.sowma.org.
