Can you spare one or two hours a week to change the future of a child impacted by homelessness?

School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) is seeking volunteers to become one-on-one afterschool tutors/mentors and positive adult role models for children impacted by homelessness in Brockton, New Bedford, Stoughton, Middleboro, and Norwell.

The greatest need for volunteers is in Brockton on Monday and Tuesday evenings, and Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, and in New Bedford on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

As a SOWMA tutor, you will help a pre-K through 12th grade student overcome obstacles to learning and achieve his or her full educational potential. You will receive training in effective tutoring strategies and ongoing support from SOWMA’s professional staff. No prior experience is needed. A three month commitment is requested.

Every SOWMA volunteer tutor is required to attend at least one orientation training session before working with a SOWMA student. Unless otherwise noted, tutor trainings are held at the SOWMA office located at 790 West Chestnut St., Brockton. Upcoming trainings will be held on the following dates and times:

Monday, August 20, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Wednesday, August 29, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Thursday, September 6, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm (713 Shawmut Ave., New Bedford)
Saturday, September 8, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

Additional trainings will be scheduled throughout the year.

For more information or to sign up for a training, contact Robin Gilbert at robin@sowma.org, or phone 508-587-9091. Learn more by visiting the SOWMA website at www.sowma.org.
