Tuesday, February 25: Basic Black: POV: American Promise
Description: Guests will join us for an inside look at the fascinating P.O.V.

documentary American Promise.

The film follows Idris Brewster, a middle-class African American, from kindergarten through twelfth grade as he treks from his home in Brooklyn to Manhattan’s Upper East Side to attend the prestigious Dalton School.

Throughout, his filmmaker parents document his experience of the school’s high-pressure academics and overwhelmingly white and wealthy social world.

Unfolding alongside Idris’s story is that of his best friend Seun, who started at Dalton with him but later transferred to a predominantly African American public school, where hethrived.

In conversation with Kim McLarin, a writer and regular panelist on WGBH's Basic Black, filmmaker Michele Stephenson, Idris’s mom, will share her experience being behind and in front of the camera as her son navigated the demands of Dalton and growing up as an African American boy.

A dessert reception follows.
