Julie Andrews played their grandmother, the unforgettable Maria Von Trapp, in The Sound of Music. The film, which immortalized their family's tale, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
And for the first time ever, the theater production of The Sound of Music has opened in their ancestral Austria, where it's been banned for the past half-century and, despite its world fame, is virtually unknown.
The Von Trapp Children are the first generation since their grandparents retired to take up the family's singing mantle. Of course, they croon a few tunes from the film- no audience would allow them otherwise- but they also offer up a dazzling menu of folk and gospel standards in clear, beautiful voices, just as fans of the film would hope.
However, the von Trapp Children are not just another novelty act riding the coattails of a legacy.
The von Trapps have booked performances throughout 2005 and 2006 with symphonies around the country, including Phoenix, Minnesota, and Danville Symphonies, and five performances each with the Detroit Symphony and renowned Cincinnati Symphony. (They are in talks with others, including the Boston Pops, Atlanta, Indianapolis and Baltimore)
They have also accepted to perform with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in a tribute to the 40th Anniversary of The Sound of Music at the famed Hollywood Bowl in July.
Sofia, 15, Melanie, 14, Amanda, 12, and Justin von Trapp, 9, have big lungs-and shoes-- to fill, but their joyful singing of a repertoire reminiscent of their famous grandparents, brings a tear to even the most hardened spirits.
