Portsmouth is a beautifully preserved, 19th-century New England seaport that just happens house an unconscionable number of toy stores and quality crafts shops. That and a couple of great restaurants--what more could you ask for?

Daytrip Itinerary ideas:

Start at Cafe Brioche. Although a summer visit demands that you grab one of the outdoor tables in Market Square, in winter you'll want to angle for a table in the warmth of this bakery/cafe.

For all things exotic, try World Wares, which stocks Indonesian and other carved creatures, or Marco Polo, a grown-up kid's delight, which features such goodies as Michelangelo's David-as-refrigerator-art.

Walk down to Deer Street and turn left to reach The Hill, a collection of restored buildings ranging in date from 1620 to 1830. Each building houses various businesses, but seek out Blue Mermaid for a great lunch.
