Babysitters
It is both healthy and normal to have a life outside of the one you share with your child. Babysitters can be your ticket out for an evening of fun, in case of an emergency, or even for part-time work when a full-time nanny is too much for your needs or your budget.
Finding a Babysitter:
Referrals are an excellent way to start. Ask your neighbors or visit your local playground to ask parents if they know of a good babysitter in need of work. In addition, you can look for job postings at a church or a temple, and even local high schools; or use a professional agency. Local colleges often offer experienced babysitting services as well.
Preparing your babysitter:
Before you leave the house for your day or evening out, it is a good idea to go over the following with the babysitter you are leaving in charge:
- Give a guided tour of your home, including kitchen, baby's clothing and toys
- Provide phone numbers for where you'll be, a trusted neighbor or relative if you can't be reached, the poison control center, the baby's pediatrician, your local hospital emergency room
- Go over instructions on feeding and soothing your baby, putting him to sleep, changing his diaper and clothes, and any quirks or habits your baby has
- Leave detailed instructions of proper procedure in the event of emergencies. Leave a baby book with a first-aid section for quick reference
- If your sitter didn't drive to your home, leave cash behind for cab fare in the event of an emergency
